Sizing of Pools, Pool liners and Equipment

It is most important that your pool suits both what you want and the layout of your garden, so the best way, before you start digging that hole, is to see what is going to suit you and the garden first.
Take a washing line or rope and lay it out in the plot, move it about, both to size and shape, and you will be able to see what its going to look like when its finished.
Pre-shaped pools in garden centres and shops look big until you get them in and then they look small so get an idea first and you will know what to expect.

IIt also helps to have a size first as you will be able to cost out what equipment you will require for your chosen size before any work is done, this can help in making sure you are going to keep to your budget and if using liners it may help as you can modify depths etc in reducing the cost and any waste.

So now we know the size of pool we want-if its going to be pre-shaped its just a matter of buying one that’s the same size but if we are going to make it out of a liner how do we get to the
required size without being short.

Follow the formular below and you wont have any trouble.
Measure your maximum length, width, and depth of the pool you want.
Add double the depth to both the length and width
Add double the overlap you require for the edges.
ie; (have done it in feet but you can do the same in metric) you have measured your pool and find you have a length of 10’, width of 5’ a depth of 2’ and require a 1’ flap all the way round.
Length of 10’ + twice depth of 2’ = 10 + 4 = 14’ + twice flap of 1’ = 14 + 2 =16’
Width of 5’ + twice depth of 2’ = 5 + 4 = 9’ = twice flap of 1’ = 9 + 2 =11’
So you can see your liner size is the nearest to 16’x11’ or in metric 5 x 4 mtrs

You now want to cost out a pump and filter system for your chosen size, again before you have started work, so you can see if its within the budget you want to spend, no problem but first we have to work out how many gallons or litres are in the pool. If we don't your filter system wont work so its most important its correct.

To do this we take your pool size 10’x5’x2’ and multiply them together so we get the cubic feet and then multiply the total by 6.25 which is how many gallons in a cubic foot.
ie: 10x5x2 = 100 x 6.25 = 625 gallons in the pool (approx 3000ltrs).

The pump required to filter the pool will need to move approx 40-50% of your pool water every hour so you can see you will need a pump that will at least, deliver to the filter 1500ltr (300gal) per hour. By following the formular for waterfalls under the heading “Making sure you buy the correct size of pond pump” you will be able to cost out the correct size you will require.

It’s the same for filters and Uv systems look for your size in the sizing filter system and you can get the price for those units as well.

If you have problems or if you want to make sure your working out is correct, have your sizes to hand and give us a ring, it only takes a few minutes, we are doing this all the time and its not as complicated as it seems.
